My dream role within the fashion industry

Personally, at this stage in my career, I would be happy with any fashion industry related job in the future! So, this a little insight into some job roles within the industry I am most intrigued in. 

What is the role of fashion PR?

Fashion public relations involves the promotion of clothing / accessory brands and other businesses through a range of marketing and social media channels either print or digital. The main role for a public relations officer is to maintain a good public image for a brand. 

What makes a good PR worker?

To succeed in the world of PR you need drive and determination, with a strong willingness to learn more along the way. With this in mind, it can be an extremely rewarding role and satisfying to see hard work paying off!

Skill number 1: Knowledge of journalism and current affairs. In PR you will be regularly working with stylist, editors and journalists so you will need to know news release formats and how to write and effective press release. You’ll also need to have good business awareness and a strong knowledge of current affairs and having a good understanding of current trends on different social media platforms such as; TikTok, instagram, YouTube etc to keep you in the loop of news agenda.

Skill number 2: Creativity. You need to be highly creative and imaginative coming up with exciting and interesting ideas that will grab people’s attention in a competitive market.

Skill number 3: Good communication and presentation ideas. In order to build your strong professional network, you’ll need to have interpersonal and communication skills. In the fast-paced world of fashion, you have to get your point across as quickly and clearly as possible.

Skill number 4: Networking. One of the most important parts of the PR role is your network, and your relationships with colleagues, clients and the media. So alongside your communication and teamwork skills, you’ll also need to be good at networking. As part of the job, it’s key to maintain good relationships with stylists, editors and social media managers across the industry.

Skill number 5: Good time management, multi-tasking skills and organisation. Every day you’ll have a lot going on; being an effective multi-tasker is vital. Being able to prioritise your jobs to meet various deadlines is also important.

Finally skill number 6: Good under pressure. You will need to be flexible and adaptable because things may go wrong at first and that's okay! Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think on your feet will also be very helpful in your career.

What is the role of a fashion editor?

Fashion editors oversee a team of journalists who write up articles on the latest fashion news and trends. Their role is also responsible for planning and organising content development, photoshoots, layouts and fashion related articles.

Fashion editors responsibilities:

- Creating storylines and producing stories to suit the magazine or website.

- Build strong communications and relationships with fashion designers and other related professionals such as photographers, journalists etc.

- Collaborate with a team of writers and other fashion roles to create unique content. 

- Supervising and managing layouts for the magazine or website. 

- Representing the brand at various networking events.

Who is Anna Wintour? 

Anna Wintour is the editor-in-chief of American Vogue and the chief content officer of Condé Nast, she is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the fashion industry. Wintour is arguably the most commercially minded editor ever. She has parlayed America's Vogue position as a documenter and badge of acceptance to place the magazine within the industry’s commercial heart. Originally from England she took a job at Biba in London before completing a training course at Harrods. Soon after, following a low experience gaining with Oz magazine, Wintour got a job working at Harper's & Queen. After a move to New York, Wintour became a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, a role she left to take up positions at Viva and later, in 1980, Savvy, a title aimed at independent, career conscious women. A readership she would later target at Vogue. Wintour was chosen by Alex Liberman to be the creative director of American Vogue. Finally, in 1985, Anna Wintour became editor in chief of British Vogue which would then additionally help her achieved the role of editor in chief of American Vogue. Since, the magazine has always been consistent with various visual aesthetics. 

 

 

Skills required to succeed in this role:

Skill number 1 : Attention to detail. This enables fashion illustrators to accurately meet clients briefs and produce the perfect visuals.

Skill number 2 : Strong communication. This ability allows fashion illustrators to understand client requirements and share their opinions on fashion projects.

Skill number 3 : Good fashion knowledge. Fashion illustrators use this skill to predict new fashion trends, produce images for projects and provide fashion designers with ideas that may interest the public.

Skill number 4 : Technical painting and drawing. This includes the ability to capture a design's essence by using precise lines, dimensions, proportions, shading and other artistic aspects to illustrate poses, figures, clothing and accessories.

Skill number 5 : Networking. These skills help fashion illustrators to find clients and maintain strong work relationships.

 

What is the role of a fashion illustrator?

Fashion illustrators have an artistic focus on clothing, style and personal image. The role involves sharing concepts visually and converting fashion concepts into accurate representations of various fashion products. Typically, fashion illustrators work with art directors and designers to create unique and artistic images for many types of media.

As I am currently studying Fashion Communications and Promotion I definitely enjoy the more creative side of the industry, however with so many other creative arts related jobs out there I would 100% be interested exploring other aspects which no doubt I would enjoy!
