Hip Hop's influence on Fashion - Fashion and Music

Hip Hop from the 1990s was commonly referred to as 'The gold age of rap music'. After this genre emerged from the early 70s in New York taking barely two decades for Hip Hop to assert itself against established music genres such as pop, rock, dance etc. At the beginning of the ’90s, Hip-Hop had reached the centre of society, and countless rappers formed and developed the music genre further.


TLC - 1990s


In terms of fashion, in the 1990s things evolved and the Hip Hop community started getting influenced by traditional African American dressing. Including, bright vibrant colours, large pants and headwear sets. Somehow work clothes of people like outdoorsmen became a fashion staple for every Gen Z. The 90s promoted function over fashion. High-waisted ripped jeans, bike shorts when walking, windbreakers, bandannas, and combat boots; 90s clothes were more than style statements, they were also really comfortable.

By the early 90s Hip Hop exploded and became one of the most popular genres of music. This culture was born on the streets of urban neighbourhoods like New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit, where rap battles and breakdancing became a way of life for teens. It wasn't long before Hip Hop expanded beyond these urban areas, people began to emulate the fashion of rappers and by the time Hip Hop was mainstream it became parallel of a specific fashion style. 

How Hip Hop influenced Tommy Hilfiger: 

American designer Tommy Hilfiger founded his brand in 1984 was started as a preppy brand. However, in the 1990s the brand shifted from a preppy base to being adopted by the Hip Hop culture. The classic red, white and blue colours was being worn by everyone from Snoop Dog to Destiney's Child. He even went as far to top R n B singer Aaliyah as one of the labels celebrity faces. 

What was the 90s known for?  

The 1990s was often remembered for a decade of relative peace and prosperity: The Soviet Union fell, which was a sequence of events that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 3rd, 1991. In addition, ending the decades long Cold-War. In the time period 1985-1991marked the final period of the Cold-War. It was characterised by a period of systemic reform within the Soviet Union and easing of geopolitical tensions between the Soviet Led Bloc and the United States Led Bloc. Another iconic part of the 90s was the rise of the internet and the radical communication of this era.
